De Vlaamse kunstenaar Johan van Geluwe is in januari van dit jaar op 90-jarige leeftijd overleden. Hij woonde in Waregem. De stad benoemde hem in 2010 tot ereburger. De ARTchitect behoorde tot een van de belangrijkste Belgische kunstenaars in de tweede helft van de vorige eeuw. De kunsthistoricus en tentoonstellingsmaker Harald Szeemann gaf hem in 2005 een centrale plaats in de tentoonstelling Visionair België in BOZAR|Brussel.
Zijn fictieve instituut The Museum of Museums vormde de rode draad in zijn werk. Daarvoor verzamelde en maakte hij mail-art, grafiek, installaties etc. Het omvangrijke – in zijn woning bijeengebrachte – oeuvre schonk hij aan het gemeentearchief van Waregem.
Johan van Geluwe had een speciale band met Middelburg. Hij vond het de meeste Vlaamse stad in Nederland. Diverse keren liet hij er de resultaten van zijn werk zien: in de Vleeshal, in GHL en in ruimteCAESUUR.
Flemish artist Johan Van Geluwe passed away in January of this year at the age of 90. Johan lived in Waregem where he was an honorary citizen.
The ARTchitect was one of the most important Belgian artists in the second half of the last century. In 2005, the art historian and curator Harald Szeemann gave him a central place in the exhibition Visionary Belgium at BOZAR | Brussels.
His fictional institute The Museum of Museums formed the leitmotiv in his work. For this Museum he collected and made mail art, graphic, installations, etc. He donated the extensive oeuvre – collected in his home – to the municipal archives of Waregem.
Johan van Geluwe had a special relationship with Middelburg. In his opinion it was the most Flemish city in the Netherlands.
